Gerry holds a degree in law and a degree in accountancy and eco­nom­ics from the University of Dundee and is a qualified Scottish solicitor. He has split his career as a senior lawyer and business manager in international financial institutions and as a partner in private legal practice. After qual­i­fy­ing as a solicitor in Edinburgh he took up a position as a commercial lawyer at ICI in London. Gerry then moved into financial services with Franklin Templeton in Edinburgh, Lazard Brothers and JP Morgan in London and Union Bançaire Privée in Geneva. In 2000 he returned to private practice as a corporate partner in Edinburgh with Ledingham Chalmers (to 2004) and Maclay, Murray & Spens specialising in financial services with a focus on international investment funds. Since 2008 he has run his own law firm/legal consultancy, Kerr & Partners, in Ed­in­burgh. His clients include a London-based hedge fund manager, the investment arm of a large global insurer and a wealth management business servicing top global sports stars.


Recent work:

  • For a large UK financial institutional investor, reviewed the launch documentation for UK and US private equity funds 
  • Drafted and ne­go­ti­ated over 30 in­sti­tu­tion­al in­vest­ment man­age­ment agree­ments for the investment arm of a large global insurer
  • Advised the partners of an existing fund structure on spinning out a new hedge fund management company including UK regulatory issues and employment law issues
